1) Keep the background simple and uncluttered.

Use a natural setting (front step with door as a background), background cloth (sheet) or foam core.






2) Use a more unusual angle.
Use your flash as a special effect. Light from chin up-Turn you camera upside down. Gives the same effect as when you put the flashlight under your chin to create a "spooky" look.

3) Ghostly movement effect.
Use a long exposure (slow speed shutter synch or night portrait mode). Make sure there is a source of light illumination your subject from the side or back. As your flash fires, pan your camera horizontally to create a ghostly effect.

4) Use night portrait mode when taking pictures outside with the kids. You can also try out slow sync flash mode. Look for a "spooky" background that sets the mood. The images will turn out similar to those above.
